Amritsar, also known as the "Golden city of India," is one of the top tourist destinations of India. The historical city is well-known for the world-famous Golden Temple, the main pilgrimage site of all Sikhs globally. The city is also known for its intense participation in the freedom struggle of India, the proximity to the Wagah Border, the benevolence of the Gobindgarh fort, and several intricately constructed places of worship.

Besides the larger-than-life Golden temple and its spiritual enthusiasm, the city holds another treasure in its trove called the Durgiana Temple.

The Durgiana Temple has architectural echoes of both the Golden Temple and conventional Hindu temples. It rises from the center of the tank and is designed like a Sikh temple, complete with canopies and a central dome.

#Trivia: Gur Shai Mal Kapoor proposed building the temple, and Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, one of India's greatest reformers and political figures, laid the building's foundation stone.

The temple is named after the mighty Goddess Durga. You will find Goddess Lakshmi's and Lord Vishnu's idols alongside Goddess Durga.

During Dussehra, Janmashtami, and Diwali, many tourists visit the temple to enjoy the festivities and offer obeisance to Maa Durga.

You can see a unique statue of Lord Hanuman taking a nap in the shrine's courtyard. It is also well-known for its collection of Hindu scriptures.

During your trip to Amritsar, you must spend a few tranquil moments soaking in the gorgeousness of the Durgiana Temple and its tranquility.

All about the Durgiana Temple, Amritsar

One of the most prominent landmarks of Amritsar, the Durgiana Temple emits a sense of calm, peace, and spirituality as the fabled Golden Temple and bears a striking similarity to it.

The history of the Durgiana Temple began with its construction in 1921. With a similar look and feel to the Golden Temple, it has a peaceful aura.

A lovely Sarovar with floating idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu can be found inside this ancient temple. The temple's main entrance is home to Gur Shai Mal Kapoor's statue. The temple's premises have a unique and unusual sculpture of Hanuman sitting.

You will find several smaller temples around this revered location and the main temple. You can visit the Bara Hanuman Mandir, Mata Sitla Mandir, and the Idols of Sat Narain and Radha Krishna.

You can also see the unique handwritten Ramayana in the Goswami Tulsidas Mandir, located nearby and dedicated to Tulsidas.

#Trivia: In 2013, the temple underwent renovations focusing on expanding the worship area and providing other relevant facilities.

Even sleeping or resting is possible at the "Shrimati Dhanwant Kaur Dharamshala," which is situated outside the temple. The Durgiana Management Committee operates Langar Bhawan, which provides daily meals to pilgrims and locals alike.

The committee is renowned for serving the community by offering a variety of services and for being the epitome of faith.

If you are lucky, you can also witness the famous and distinctive Langooranwala Mela at the Durgiana Temple.

During Navaratras, the Hanuman Temple within the Durgiana Temple complex is a riot of color. Children dress up like langurs, wearing bright red and silver clothes, headgear, and faces painted with Multani Mithi and long tails. On the street leading to the temple, there is a parade with kids dancing to loud music.

Architecture of the Durgiana Temple of Amritsar

The Golden Temple's architectural design served as the inspiration for the Durgiana Temple. The gilded dome of the historic temple is recreated in the Durgiana temple, which is situated in the center of the Sarovar and resembles the Golden Temple.

Similar to the Golden temple, you have a marble bridge that one can use to cross to reach the temple. You will find several religious inscriptions on the lovely silver mandir door with intricate carvings adorning the outer walls.

The Deori is also known as the Silver Temple because of the idols of Goddess Durga and Ganesha that are sculpted onto the silver doors of the temple.

Several marble statues representing various deities decorate the Sarovar. Devotees can locate Lord Shiva in the meditation stands in the Sarovar, which is home to various colorful fish.
